In the face of the fourth round of renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), business leaders from both the United States and Mexico will hold a meeting to conduct a "business dialogue" aimed at exchange opinions and strategies that provide certainty to the business of both nations.
The event will be attended by the Secretary of Economy, Ildefonso Guajardo, as well as the president of the American Chamber of Commerce of Mexico (Amcham), Monica Flores and the former Undersecretary of Foreign Trade of the US Department of Economy, Francisco de Rosenzweig.
Also the secretary of Foreign Relations, Luis Videgaray, and the Secretary of Property, Jose Antonio Meade, according to the calendar of the summit of closed doors.
As a preamble, about 100 trade and government representatives attended the Mexico-United States CEO Dialogue in December 2016, where US Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue told attendees that the largest corporate lobbying organization was aimed at preventing Trump from nullifying NAFTA.
Now, the Mexico-United States CEO Dialogue is expected to be held on Wednesday and will be attended by Tom Donohue.
The US president has repeatedly called NAFTA a "disaster" and has threatened to abandon the trade agreement, however, companies are upset by US proposals to add a five-year termination clause, reverse access from Canadian and Mexican firms to US procurement contracts and raise so-called "rules of origin" limits to "extreme" levels, said John Murphy, senior vice president of international policy. At the closing of this edition, the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) did not confirm the existence of this meeting and neither did the press office of the State Chamber of Commerce.
